The new fad that’s been popping up on facebook is oil pulling with coconut oil. Basically, you put a tablespoon of raw unrefined coconut oil in your mouth, swish around for 20 minutes, then spit it in the trash and rinse with water.
I decided to give it a go since I don’t have the greatest oral health – I know I have fillings that have popped out but haven’t been to the dentist in YEARS. I also have weak gums. It was also perfect for me because I sit pumping breastmilk for 20 minutes every morning before I go to work.
I am an advocate for the benefits of coconut oil, especially eating it. It has excellent anti-inflammatory properties and has even been linked to slowing the signs of alzheimer’s disease. The benefits of swishing it around and spitting it out (spitting it out because it pulls toxins, and into the trash because it can cause your drain to clog): whiter teeth, less gum disease, cavity healing, clears sinuses due to allergy, eases TMJ symptoms, less headaches, better sleep, less joint issues, hangover cure, brighter skin and less acne… really, the list goes on.
At first it’s a little strange – putting an oily solid in your mouth before brushing and swishing for what seems like forever. If my babe woke up while I was pumping, I couldn’t talk to her or read her a book. I was doing this every morning which got a little mundane, but I’ve read that 4-5 times a week is sufficient. I did get tired of it and stopped after a month, but during that time I felt my gums were healthier and teeth were whiter. It’s worth a shot for a month before my next dental visit to see if they notice a difference as well.
